GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR, WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN...
ABOUT ME, THE INSTRUCTOR:
My name is Alison Newth...I have been working as an elementary school teacher in FSJ for 10+ years but have been painting for much longer than that. I am an active participant in the FSJ art community and am a member of Flying Colours Artists, Federation of Canadian Artists and the Peace River Chapter of the FCA. A LITTLE OVERVIEW:
In the fall of 2017, I decided it was time to combine my two passions and start teaching art from my home in FSJ. I am excited about this new journey. I am currently offering classes for kids, teens and adults. Every class is a little different--there will be drawing, painting and good old fashion crafting. Students will learn techniques and skills, discover a variety of materials and have fun doing it. I will be posting classes on here, in my newsletter as well as on facebook.
WHAT WILL STUDENTS GAIN FROM THE CLASSES?
My goal is to teach techniques/skills while encouraging creativity. I want the art classes to be a positive experience, with the hope that the student will be excited to continue. I pursued art because I loved it...the techniques and skills were built naturally over time through enjoyable practice. This is what I am hoping for my students.
HOW ARE CLASSES STRUCTURED?
In most of the classes, there will be a mixture of instruction, guided practice, teacher modelling and independent work. Sometimes, the project requires that we jump right in. For kids/teens classes, we will break part way through for a light snack, while things are drying.
For example, in my KIDS DRAW & PAINT TREES class, we start with a guided, structured mini-lesson on crayon resist/watercolour technique/complementary colours. This is followed by guided drawing of various tree shapes and styles. Students end the lesson by drawing and painting their own 'treed landscape' masterpiece, using ideas/techniques presented during the first half of the class.
WHAT KIND OF ART WILL THE STUDENTS COME HOME WITH?
It depends on the class--read the description to see if the art will be done on watercolour paper, hard canvas board, wrapped canvas, etc. My intention will be for students to leave with finished art that they are proud of. However, I doubt that that will always happen. As artists explore and try new things, interesting things can happen to one's artwork. We have to be open to that. Regardless, if we think about the goal of these art classes--for students to learn techniques/skills and explore their creative side--then all classes, regardless of the end product, could be considered a success.
WHERE ARE CLASSES HELD?
Classes are held in my home, in NE FSJ. Address provided upon receipt of payment. There is space for 8 students. For those with allergies, it is important that you know that we are a pet-friendly home. We have a cat as well as 2 dogs (the dogs will be kept downstairs during classes). The dogs will bark when people come to the door but will quiet down very quickly.
WILL YOU TEACH SMALLER GROUPS, OR ONE-ON-ONE?
I can be available to teach in a variety of ways: small groups, one-on-one, larger groups/staff community-building (off-site), etc. Prices would change, depending on the situation. Contact me with questions.
